Athletic Dept., Teams Honored for Charitable Efforts

March 11, 2015 By Team Up 4 Community

The Smithtown CSD Athletics Department won third place in the W20 Foundation’s Project Team Up 4 Community annual Holiday Heroes Challenge. The organization lauded the Smithtown Athletics Department for its commitment to making an impact in the community during the 2014-15 school year.

“Their community service work is commendable,” said the W20 Foundation’s Project Team Up 4 Community on its website. “They have done many projects that include raising funds and awareness for cancer research, to feeding the hungry and homeless on Long Island. Their projects clearly demonstrate the passion they have to making a difference in the lives of others…We thank Smithtown for assisting the W20 Foundation to deliver this impactful program in and all around our Long Island communities. We recognize athletes and organizations like theirs as our partners in achieving our goal.”
Several Smithtown athletic teams volunteered their time and made various donations to community service causes for local food pantries, shelters, cancer awareness causes and the like.

Representatives from W20 Foundation’s Project Team Up 4 Community attended a recent Smithtown Board of Education meeting to present Patrick Smith, coordinator of physical education, athletics, health and nurses, with a $500 grant for their community service efforts. NBTY’s Helping Hands program is the corporate sponsor of the grant. Many of the coaches whose teams were involved in community service efforts were present to share in the celebration. Smithtown CSD has chosen to donate the $500 to a number of selected charitable organizations.
